Band will provide yet another way for students to experience what it is like for people to overcome obstacles. Music is a human invariant, which means it is find everywhere, across cultures and generations, anywhere that people exist. We take it for granted that we have instruments to play, music to read, CD’s, stereo systems and all of those great resources for learning and making music. There are many places that don’t have any of these things, yet they still make music. In band, students will make their own percussion instrument out of household items. They will then use this instrument to make music in band without the use of sheet music, band instruments or any of the great technology we take for granted. Thus students will experience yet one more way that human beings manage to overcome obstacles.
